TVP Softball History
Tom Voyle formed the Cambridge Softball Club in 1950. Softball was initially played at Cambridge High School (now Cambridge Middle School) and later relocated to the present grounds at Tom Voyle Park when the high school moved to its current site. In 1960, two council flats were shifted to Tom Voyle Park to form the clubrooms, and in 1970, a block extension was added due to the growing number of participants. These buildings are still in use today by the Cambridge Softball Club.
Tom Voyle ran the club for many years, fostering a strong presence in local schools and hosting tournaments with up to 60 teams. In 1964, Tom proudly managed the New Zealand Men's Softball Team to victory in Mexico, winning their first World Series. That same year, Gaye Bezzant of Cambridge joined the New Zealand Women's Softball Team and competed in the World Series in Australia.
The club welcomed legendary softballer Kevin Herlihy in 1970. By the mid-seventies, Cambridge boasted up to 14 men's and women's teams. Kevin Herlihy and Carl Mossman represented New Zealand in the 1976 World Series in the Hutt Valley, with Kevin becoming legendary for pitching 21 innings in the final against the United States.
In 1979, the Cambridge Bluestreaks won the New Zealand Men's National Final in Invercargill. Bruce McIntosh and Kevin Herlihy were both selected for the New Zealand Men's Softball Team for World Series events in 1980 and 1984. In 2006, Courtney Maihi, who played for the Cambridge Women's team, represented Waikato and went on to join the New Zealand Women's Whitesox, currently playing in the United States under a scholarship.
Throughout its history, Cambridge Softball has seen numerous players represent Waikato in men's, women's, and junior softball. Cambridge remains the only club in Waikato with its own clubrooms and playing fields
